When Your Skin Keeps Flaring Up: Looking Beyond the Surface
Have you ever had a skin problem that seemed to disappear with a cream, only to come back again?
Maybe the redness went away.
The itching stopped.
The rash cleared.
And you thought, Finally! It's gone.
Only to find yourself reaching for that same cream again a few weeks or months later.
This is something I think is worth looking at a little more closely.
Making a symptom disappear and understanding the person experiencing the symptom are two different things.
The skin is visible—but the whole person isn't.
Skin is often where we can see that something is happening.
Redness.
Dryness.
Itching.
Scaling.
Blisters.
Cracking.
Swelling.
Oozing.
And because we can see it, it's natural to want to put something on it.
But there is another question I think is worth asking when a skin condition keeps coming back:
Why does this keep happening?
Relief isn't necessarily the same thing as resolution.
From a homeopathic perspective, we look at this differently.
Homeopathy traditionally considers the outward symptoms to be part of the body's overall expression of imbalance. Rather than focusing only on making the skin look better, the homeopathic approach seeks to understand the individual pattern behind the complaint.
That means I'm not only interested in what the rash looks like.
I'm interested in the person who has it.
When did it begin?
What was happening around the time it started?
Is it itchy, burning, painful, dry, or oozing?
Is it better or worse at a particular time of day?
Does heat affect it?
Does cold?
Does scratching help or make it worse?
Has this happened before?
What happened the last time?
And perhaps most importantly:
What else is going on with this person?
What about repeated creams and medications?
This is where the concept of suppression comes into the traditional homeopathic philosophy.
In homeopathy, suppression refers to reducing or removing an outward symptom without addressing what the practitioner believes is the deeper pattern behind it.
So, for example, if a rash repeatedly disappears while using a particular treatment but continually returns when the treatment stops, a homeopath may not simply view that as “the cream worked, so we're done.”
They may ask:
Why does the skin keep producing this pattern?
And that can change the conversation.
Instead of only asking:
“What can I put on this?”
we might also ask:
“What is happening in this person's overall health that is worth understanding?”
Sometimes the history matters more than the appearance.
Imagine someone comes to me with a rash that they've had on and off for several years.
They've tried multiple creams.
Some helped temporarily.
Some didn't seem to do much.
Maybe they've changed soaps, detergents, lotions, foods, supplements—you name it.
At that point, I don't want to simply look at the rash and say:
“Here's another cream.”
I want to hear the whole story.
Because two people can have skin that looks remarkably similar while having very different experiences.
And that's one of the things I find so interesting about individualized homeopathy.
The symptom is only one piece of the puzzle.
This is where individualized homeopathy comes in.
When someone works with me at Rustic Roots Homeopathy, I'm not simply looking at a picture of a rash and choosing a remedy.
I'm interested in the individual.
The person.
The timeline.
The patterns.
The things that make their experience unique.
Because my goal isn't simply to ask:
“How do we make this rash disappear?”
It's to step back and understand the person experiencing it and consider the case as a whole.
If you've been dealing with a recurring skin concern and feel like you're constantly putting something on it without understanding the bigger picture, that's something we can talk about.
You don't have to know the remedy.
You don't have to know whether homeopathy is the answer.
You can simply start with:
“This keeps happening, and I'd like to understand what's going on.”
🌿 That's exactly where an individualized consultation can begin.
