When You Keep Getting the Same Symptom Over and Over…
Have you ever had a symptom finally go away, only to find yourself dealing with the exact same thing again a few weeks or months later?
Maybe it’s the same headache.
The same digestive issue.
The same cough that seems to make its way back every season.
The same painful period.
The same skin flare.
You deal with it, find something that helps, move on with life…and then suddenly:
Here we are again.
When something keeps coming back, it can be easy to focus on getting rid of the symptom as quickly as possible.
And of course, when you don't feel good, you want relief.
But sometimes I think it's worth stepping back and asking a different question:
Why does this keep happening?
The symptom is important—but it may not be the whole story.
One of the things I love about homeopathy is the way it encourages us to look at the individual rather than simply putting a label on a symptom.
For example, two people might both experience headaches.
One person may get them every month around a certain point in their cycle.
Another may get them after a stressful week.
Someone else may notice theirs after missing a meal or not getting enough sleep.
The headache may look similar from the outside, but the story surrounding it can be very different.
That's why when I'm working with someone, I'm interested in more than simply knowing what the symptom is.
I'm interested in the pattern.
What was happening when it started?
Sometimes the timing of a recurring symptom gives us something important to look at.
Did it begin after an illness?
After a stressful period?
After a major life change?
Does it happen at a particular time of the month?
Does it tend to show up during a certain season?
Does it follow the same pattern every time—or has the pattern changed?
These are the kinds of details that can easily get overlooked when we're focused only on getting through the current episode.
What does "recurring" actually look like for you?
This is something I encourage people to pay attention to.
Instead of simply writing:
“Headache again.”
Try noticing a little more.
When did it start?
Where is it?
What does it feel like?
What were you doing beforehand?
What makes it better?
What makes it worse?
What else is happening at the same time?
And perhaps most importantly:
Is there anything unusual about this particular episode?
You don't have to become obsessed with tracking every little thing.
But when you're dealing with the same issue over and over, patterns can sometimes become much easier to recognize when you start looking at the bigger picture.
Acute relief and the bigger picture aren't always the same thing.
This is also where I think it's important to understand the difference between an acute situation and a longer-term pattern.
If something comes on suddenly, an acute consultation may be appropriate for looking at what is happening right now.
But if you're saying,
“This keeps happening.”
that's a different conversation.
If the same complaint has been showing up for months or years, or keeps returning despite repeatedly addressing each episode, it may be worth stepping back and looking at the person and the pattern as a whole.
That's where a more in-depth consultation can be helpful.
You don't have to figure it out by yourself.
One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that you need to know the right remedy before reaching out to a homeopath.
You don't.
You don't need to come to me with a remedy name.
You don't need to have everything figured out.
You can simply say:
“This keeps happening, and I don't know why.”
That's enough of a place to start.
From there, we can slow down, talk through what's been happening, look at the patterns, and gather the details that make your experience unique.
Because you are more than the symptom that keeps showing up.
And sometimes, instead of asking only:
“What can I take for this?”
it can be helpful to pause and ask:
“What is this pattern trying to tell me about my experience?”
That's the kind of deeper look I love taking with my clients at Rustic Roots Homeopathy.
